Exploring the Town of Kennecott and Kennecott Mines. While the drive over the McCarthy Road may be daunting, Kennecott is a golden nugget, or should I say copper nugget, at the end of a long and dusty road. This fabulous site is a huge complex of barnred buildings that make up the Kennecott mill town, built in 1907 by the Kennecott Copper Corporation.
The Kennecott (North Zone) site is in an industrial area west of Salt Lake City, Utah. Starting in 1906, the Kennecott Utah Copper Company (Kennecott) processed metals, including copper and lead, in the area. Production wastes contaminated soil and groundwater. Contamination forced the closure of drinking water wells in the area.
Approximately 20 tons of tellurium will be produced per year through a new million circuit built at the Kennecott refinery. This valuable material is recovered from byproduct streams generated during the copper refining process, reducing the amount of waste that needs to be treated and discarded as mine tailings.

The mine tour is really interesting to learn how hard it was to extract the copper from the rock. A steep trail goes up to the top of the Mill and mill tour starts there going down many stairs and floors to ground level. Lots of other hiking trails out to the Glaciers etc. Visited June 2022.
